On this episode of I Didn’t Wake Up Like This, top derm Skinfluencer and Mohs surgeon Dr. Sheila Farhang walks us through an easy and effective skincare routine for the summer.
SHEILA FARHANG: Hi, everyone. My name is Dr. Sheila Farhang. I’m a board certified dermatologist. And I’m going to show you guys the best summertime skin care routine, because I didn’t wake up like this.
A must first initial step in a skin care routine is a gentle cleanser. One of my favorite drugstore products is CereVe Cream to Foam Cleanser. It’s ultra gentle for sensitive skin, removes makeup, which is great. And it has ceramides, as well as hyaluronic acid. Make sure not to use hot water. You want to use tepid temperature water, because you don’t want to strip the natural oils.
When you do dry your skin, you want to make sure to pat dry it with your towel so you’re not rubbing aggressively. Next up, in the mornings after the gentle cleanser, you want to use an antioxidant, such as vitamin C. One of my favorite drugstore products is the Roc Multicorrectional Revive and Glow. And look at how nice it comes on.
People always ask me what order we should apply products. And you want to go from the thinnest to thickest. So after washing your face, you want to apply your serums before your creams and oils.
For the night time, you can actually switch out the vitamin C antioxidant. And then you want to add an anti-aging product, such as the Neutragena Sustain Action Retinol. What retinol does is it increases cell turnover. You are almost making the skin renew faster. It’s like a mini peel every night. Don’t forget that you are not supposed to treat around your eyes, because it’s not meant for that.
Next step is an eye cream. I personally like the DEJ by Revision. The type of eye cream that maybe you should use really depends on what you want to focus on treating. If it’s crepeyness that you want to focus on, then you want something that has anti-aging properties. If you have under eye bags, you want something to help get that puffiness away, something like caffeine to constrict the vessels.
And then three, if you’re dealing with dark circles under the eyes, it could be just hollowness, or it could just be hyperpigmentation darkness of the actual skin, so you want something to help brighten. All right, so in the morning after your gentle cleanser, your vitamin C antioxidant, that is when you want to apply your sunscreen. And one of my favorite, favorite products is the La Roche-Posay Toleraine Double Repair Moisturizer with SPF 30.
And it has UVA and UVB protection. Fun fact, UVA actually goes through windows. And so when you’re driving the car or you’re inside and you think, oh, I don’t need sunscreen, you actually do, because the light from the windows, blue light from our screens, can actually works in a lot of hyperpigmentation and cause aging.
This is how much I use. It is quite a bit. You should at least be using over 30 SPF for every day. If you’re out, like on a boat or hiking, you should at least use over 50, even 100, because that gives you a little bit more room in case you can’t reapply every two hours.
