Right about now, we’re probably all in need of something to look forward to. It could be that major trip you’ve had to postpone for the past two years, the return of a highly anticipated TV show, or, in the case of all beauty enthusiasts, a new hairstyle. Maybe the start of a new year is your annual cue to switch up your vibe with a fresh cut, or your reason could be that 2021 was just a complete dumpster fire that you want to erase all memories of, hairstyles included. Either way, we understand—which is why we looked to several hairstylists for their thoughts on which looks we should add to our mood boards for the upcoming year. Ahead, you’ll find 2022 hair trends which include some throwback looks that you’ll actually want to revisit, along with new hairstyle ideas that feature a mix of hair textures.

1

Dramatic Braids

“Long textured ponytails will be huge—long dramatic braids,” says hairstylist Takisha Sturdivant-Drew, who has styled the manes of Kerry Washington and Renée Elise Goldsberry. “My best tip on creating this look is to tailor it to yourself. Finish off the style with the Sebastian Professional Potion 9 for conditioning and the Sebastian Professional Shaper hairspray to hold all of the hair in place at the end. Last but not least, accessorize if you want to turn up the heat!”

2

Choppy Layers

Sturdivant-Drew also says that if your hair is on the shorter side, the details of your cut will be key. “[Keep] the sides very tapered as well as the back, and laid flat when styling but longer on the top. It’s a choppy layered look.”

3

Short Cuts

The verdict is in: “2022 will be the year of the chop,” says Joseph Maine, celebrity hairstylist and co-founder of Trademark Beauty. “The grown-out tresses of the past couple of years will be a thing of the past. Women are ready for a change and open to cuts that require a bit more maintenance.” If you prefer to ease into a more cropped style, Maine says that there’s not just one short haircut that will rule over others. “Any length from chin to collarbone will be on point. We will see them styled from sleek and shiny to bouncy and curly.”

4

Middle Parts

Apparently, TikTok was right: middle parts reign supreme. In the mix of 2022 hair trends, expect to see center parts on updos. “This look has become a model favorite and people are getting the hang of these sleek updos,” says Maine. “There’s something a little more casual and ‘cool girl’ about keeping a middle part, even when your hair is pulled up. There are many tricks to help you achieve this look, but breaking your hair into separate sections is where they all start.” Duly noted.

5

Liquid Hair

“Everyone is looking for that ultra-shiny sleek hair that still has a bit of movement,” Maine points out. “It can be difficult to smooth your hair while keeping a bit of bend and movement. Sometimes the hair becomes dry looking in the process and loses that liquid movement and reflection.” To maintain both the shine and fluidity of this look, he recommends using Trademark Beauty’s Easy Blo to smooth and detangle in a single step. “The oval shape is perfect for helping you achieve that little kiss of bend on your ends.” For the gloss factor, work the Trademark Beauty Argan Oil Daily Elixir through hair while it’s still wet, and then a little more after the blowout to get the liquid look.

6

The Bixie

As the name suggests, this mashup is a cross between a bob and a pixie cut. “The Bixie is more textured than a bob, but not as cropped as a pixie,” explains celebrity hairstylist and UNITE Ambassador Graham Nation. “It’s messy and free, with less shape and more texture.”

7

Zigzag Parts

If you’re a ride-or-die to your side part, consider spicing it up a bit for the new year. Celebrity hairstylist Ayano Jinnouchi predicts that creative parting paired with a simple style will be one of 2022’s biggest hair trends. And if this look is giving you déjà vu, it’s because it’s a throwback favorite from the ’90s and early 2000s.

8

Halfsie Pigtails

One thing from 2021 that everyone is okay with carrying over into 2022 are pigtails, and this half-up-half-down look is just too cute. “The trick to this style is keeping your pigtails smooth and tamed,” says celebrity hairstylist Hayley Heckmann. “I love using GO365 Hairspray on the medium setting with a toothbrush to tame any frizz and flyaways.”

9

Curly Bangs

“Curly fringe isn’t going anywhere,” says Clayton Hawkins, celebrity hairstylist and Tangle Teezer stylist ambassador, who also happens to be the hands behind some of Olivia Rodrigo’s most notable hairstyles. “This face-framing style is fresh, beautiful, and a great way to protect your hair without having to put heat on it! For years, people thought only straight-haired girls could rock bangs, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth!” If you’re not ready to commit to a cut, try it on a wig like Lupita did here.
