It’s Hollywood’s biggest night and despite the global pandemic, some big stars turned out in person for the 2021 Academy Awards! And since it was one of the first real red carpets in a long time, the fashion was definitely on point. Wonderwall.com is rounding up the fancy night’s best and worst dressed stars, starting with this puzzling pick from Laura Dern. The actress arrived in this perplexing Oscar de la Renta number, which started out simple enough as a mockneck, long sleeved frock before giving way to a ridiculous asymmetrical feathered skirt below the hips. Despite despising the strange dress, we did adore her shoe choice. See those and more fashion hits and misses of the night next…

Halle Berry was pretty in pink Dolce&Gabbana on the Oscar red carpet. The beauty donned this strapless gown with a sweetheart neckline and an exaggerated bow detail at the waist, giving it a sweet and feminine vibe.
We were disappointed by Reese Witherspoon’s Dior dress on Oscar night. The star’s red frock started out strong, with an asymmetrical neckline and beautiful ruching, but the black belt ruined things for us, breaking up the otherwise pretty pleated design. Despite not loving the dress, Reese served up some of our favorite jewelry of the night…

We weren’t wild about Glenn Close’s Armani Prive getup. The iconic actress donned this electric blue tunic with crystal beading, which on its own was beautiful, but when paired with midnight blue silk pants and evening gloves, this look took a turn. Despite the odd styling choices, we did love the way her heels matched the pants perfectly, and the way she added beautiful drop earrings. Let’s take a closer look…

It was custom Louis Vuitton for Regina King, who wowed in this pale blue creation by the fashion house. We loved the ruffling and the unexpected plunging at the neckline and the unique silhouette of the skirt. And when it came time for hair, makeup and jewels, the star kept things classic. Let’s zoom in…
When it came time for jewels, Amanda Seyfried wore stunning Forevermark earrings. The beauty sported her hair in a low bun and kept her makeup simple. Our only complaint? We wish she would have kept the red theme and rocked a red lip instead of that purple shade.
Not so mellow yellow! Zendaya wowed in Valentino Haute Couture, arriving on the red carpet in this neon yellow strapless gown with a unique cutout below the bust. It also featured a train that was visible from other angles…

Legendary actress Rita Moreno committed to a bold burgundy shade at the Oscars — from her coat to her dress to her jewelry. We didn’t love the styling choice, with the thick coat and chunky beaded necklace distracting from her pretty strapless gown, or the way she finished off a nearly monochromatic look with thick black strappy heels.
Viola Davis rocked custom Alexander McQueen for the occasion, wowing in this intricate gown. The unique frock started out with a structured corset before flowing into a floor-length skirt, giving a nice contrast between the sharp cutouts and delicate pleats. Riz Ahmed’s Prada look mixed formal and casual in a surprising way for menswear — sporting both a mock turtleneck and a cummerbund with his Prada tuxedo. The risky mix paid off and he completed his look with sharp black dress shoes.
While we loved the bold cobalt blue hue, H.E.R.’s lacy sheer Dundas look scored a miss in our book. The jumpsuit-style ensemble included an attached cape-like detail in the same embroidered lace fabric that lost us, though we did appreciate her commitment to the shade…

Best original song nominee Celeste selected a custom Gucci gown for the occasion — which featured a red and black design at the top that gave way to a simpler floor-length black skirt. We weren’t loving the look, but her clutch cemented this one as a miss in our book. Can you tell what it is?
Celeste carried this bizarre clutch to go along with her Gucci gown — a purse in the shape of an anatomically correct human heart.
